PURIM

Purim commemorates the saving, by Mordecai and Esther, of the Jews of ancient Persia

from Haman's massacre.

This is the festival of “casting lots” (by Haman) to determine the day when the Jews

were to be exterminated.

The Megillah of Esther (scroll) is read in the Synagogue and carnivals, feasts, plays and gift giving are traditional.

Foods for Purim:

The Purim festival meal is a family get-together with special Purim dishes.

This is traditionally 'Hamantashen' (triangular cakes) usually filled with poppy seeds

(mohn) or mashed prunes.

It is a reminder of Haman's three cornered hat or pocket.

Traditional foods also include biscuits, cookies, dessert ices and all party foods.
